A cute baby and some questions

Working on his James Dean expression. My brother and his wife were sweet enough to send me this picture, showing that the sling fits Baby Isaac and is actually useful for the baby's genetic aversion to sleep.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Canadian cousin is an exclusively back-hugging marsupial. This mirror is about a thousand years old and my camera lens needs cleaning and it's hard to get a clean picture when you're jiggling up and down singing "Rafe-a-Rafe-a-Roo"

So on to my questions. I think it's time to paint that ceiling. My really hip, artsy friends love this ceiling—one even spoke of "patina," whereas I'm not really into the Third World look. Or should I say "emerging country" look? Suggestions? Should I spray some machine gun holes into the walls? Perhaps some political graffiti? A gecko?

And sisters, I have a really urgent hair question. Can someone with dry, frazzled, curly hair, like myself, have stylish bangs? Or would I have a pouff? I don't want a pouff.

  1. I say anything, ANYTHING, mind...even patina over a...sprayed ceiling...

Know nothing about curly hair and bangs, sorry. Only strong opinions on ceilings. And a few other things. Not bangs.

  2. Dear Mary, I've wrestled for years with poofy hair and bangs. I was teased about it in grade-school and nearly scarred for life :) If you want bangs, I would say keep them thin, don't do to many of them (or it will be a hedge)and use leave in conditioner or hair-spray. I think it would suit your face very nicely. I'm going to miss you guys a lot in BC. Keep in touch.

    1. Oh Lizzie, thanks for forgiving me! Sometimes I can't believe you even love me at all.

These words "hedge" and "hairspray" are weighing down the cons.

  3. I like your ceiling too! I remember when we were renovating and gutting our bedroom and we came down to the plank wood walls...I so wanted to keep them that way with a light coating of white paint. The rest would have none of it. Ah, well. White paint? That's original I know? Are you keeping the walls white, or are you waiting on them?

As for bangs, I am terrified to go back to bangs after pre-teen growing out periods requiring smelly hairspray all those years ago. But I have straight hair and am told I could pull it off. I know nothing about curly hair, though I think your hair looks lovely twisted back and pinned up. Methinks to make curly haired-bangs look fabulous you might have to experiment with "product" -- I am pretty clueless about using that stuff.

Love the sling on your brother!

    1. Yes, but see you're hip and artsy.

And you're right about white. Of course it has to be white. And about "product"...eek.

Product freaks me out. I mean, you'd have to walk down that aisle in the store, and make a choice. And spend money. And then more money when you realize you made the wrong choice. And then lots more money when someone tells you not to bother with cheap crap....and then you decide that that it's not worth it, and you're left with a pouff.

Ok, the cons are piling up.

  4. How interesting... my baby has an aversion to sleep too. I'm trying to nurse him to sleep as I write. He's too smart for these games, mind you.

I really like the ceiling, and I am most assuredly NOT artsy.

    1. My babies don't sleep until they are two years old, when they crash from sheer exhaustion. Which means I haven't slept through the night in seven years! Somehow your body adjusts.

Jenna, this is a superpower—we know how to stay up all night! We could have a career in military intelligence ahead of us! Or we could get our doctorates! We could become medical doctors while nursing our babies! (Although the rule at the Pemberton's is one doctorate at a time)...

    2. or we could just stay moms, and actually have an impact on the world. Yes, I like the sound of that.

  5. I'd paint the ceiling BEFORE you get the gecko LOL. And as for the bangs? My hair suddenly decided to be curly about 6 months ago - I have NO idea what to do about my bangs that doesn't require hair gel!

  6. I am going to be contrary and say: not only should you paint, but you should also paint it a color! like, robins egg. I love painted ceilings. also, don't get bangs. they are much more trouble than they are worth. If you really want to experiment, I'd do it in the fall/winter, but in the summer they'll just be hot.

    1. ROBIN's EGG WOULD BE SO LOVELY! And as you can see, it's impossible to make that ceiling worse.

  7. No ceiling comments but I do have bangs advice. My hair might look straight but if you want to know how curly it actually is, let me know and I will invite you to the family blog. I had straight hair until babies and since the arrival of the offspring the underside of my hair has grown increasingly curly while the top just gets frizzy. Interesting look. I hate product but my hairdresser actually sold me some stuff two weeks ago that works at keeping down the frizz or keeping in the curl and doesn't feel like product. Of course, it is pricier than the grocery aisle. But worth it. I am 34 and I need to grow up and grow into product... And, I second Erin: I love your hair. As for bangs: I would advise you not to get bangs unless they are side bangs that can handle kinks and curls otherwise you will deeply regret the cut. I have to be honest - I have been down this route too many times before.
And, I haven't slept through the night in 16 years thanks to a faulty British bladder genetically damaged by too much tea. Beat that.

  8. Perhaps if I still lived in Canada I would consider the ceiling as having 'patina', but living in Slovakia it just makes me think 'post-communism.' If there was wood involved it would be different, I think it's the water stained plaster that does it.

I love the juxtaposition of the tough black jacket, slingified baby, and medal on your brother.

Another option for bangs is straightening them, just the bangs, not all your hair.

  9. I kinda like the ceiling, but then I decorate with antlers (or my husband does). I have no idea on the bangs, sorry. But I have go to say bravo to your family. Men wearing slings and baby backpacks. That is so awesome to see.

  10. KIlz paint for primer, then the robin's egg blue. Pay a little brother to do it while you and the kids are out of the house. I hate fumes (doesn't Kilz sound awful?), but it really is the only type of paint I've found with staying power.
